Sea Trout Facts

The Sea Trout Resource

Unlike resident brown trout, sea trout become of interest to anglers and commercial netsmen when they are either still feeding and growing in the sea, or have completed their marine growth and returning to fresh water to spawn.

The sea trout is an important natural resource that can provide significant social and economic benefits (principally via angling) to communities - particularly in rural areas. However, unfortunately, in many rivers it is still regarded as being of secondary importance to the salmon.

Reductions in sea trout numbers have been caused have been caused by over-exploitation, pollution, degradation of freshwater habitats, man-made obstructions (e.g. dams), disease (e.g. Ulcerative Dermal Necrosis), and parasite infestation by sea lice linked to the marine cultivation of Atlantic salmon.
