Postal Auction 2009

A warm welcome to the Atlantic Salmon Trust's Annual Auction! – for the first time held in conjunction with the support of our good friends the Rivers and Fisheries Trusts of Scotland (RAFTS) and the Association of Rivers Trusts (ART). This is now the most comprehensive selection of quality salmon and sea trout fishing available anywhere at one time – truly the stuff of every fisherman's dreams!!

We warmly welcome new offerings from the Ness, Bellart, Border Esk, Doon, Frome, Lambourn, Lyon, North Tyne, South Esk, Tummel, Ure, Owenmore in Ireland, West Ranga in Iceland, the Namsen in Norway, as well as a great many old favourites on other well known rivers and waters. These have been made available through the generosity of our friends and supporters without whom none of this – our major fundraising activity – would be possible. A massive vote of thanks to all involved for helping the Trust in this way!

Last year the Trust made a record level of grants to rivers, fisheries, scientists, and universities in the interests of achieving abundant and sustainable stocks of wild salmon and sea trout throughout the British Isles. And we are working with international partners to persuade governments and decision–makers that healthy populations of these fish contribute socially and economically.

Our support for research into the lives of salmon at sea through the SALSEA–Merge North Atlantic programme, combined with the new genetic map of salmon river catchments, will give fishery managers the data needed to manage salmon populations, as well answering why salmon mortality at sea is so high. Associated closely with marine mortality, is continuing concern over the impact of salmon aquaculture and the detrimental effects of coastal mixed stocks netting. A sustainable salmon and sea trout fisheries sector needs these issues to be addressed, and we are doing so.

Finally, and in response to concerns of our many supporters, the Trust has launched a co–ordinating campaign of existing sea trout research covering all British waters, with the objective of stepping up political and public awareness on behalf of sea trout and the acute survival pressures they face.

Last year’s Auction ran smoothly, and will be repeated in the same format. The majority of Lots will be operated in the traditional Silent (Postal) Auction by post, fax or email to the office – with the final deadline of 9am on Tuesday 3rd February 2009. The Electronic On–Line Auction below consists of a selected range of Lots and operates separately.

Every season is different; a reduced Spring run and late arrival of grilse were compensated by the return to many rivers of a special generation of multi sea winter salmon, whose considerable weight and superb condition testified to their feeding regime! We must fervently hope that they spawned productively!

Everyone at the Trust would like to convey the Compliments of the Season to all our readers, donors, supporters, and bidders old and new; we would encourage you to ‘have a go’ for as many Lots as possible, sure in the knowledge that your money will go towards worthwhile research and restoration programmes, and that your enjoyment of magical fishing waters will be unsurpassed!
